Label check

Pick up any prebiotic and probiotic label and answer five questions. You will get a short list of what to look for. Your answers stay on this page. Each line explained: the combo label guide.

Does it give the genus, species and strain of each probiotic?
Is the CFU count listed through the expiration or use-by date?
Does it have an expiration or use-by date?
Does it say how to store it?
Does it name the prebiotic and give its amount?

Five words on a combo label

One plain sentence each, with the public source it comes from. The full ISAPP definitions, side by side, are in prebiotic vs probiotic.

CFU

Colony-forming units. NIH says a CFU count is a more accurate picture of how many active microorganisms a product holds than its total weight.

CFU through expiration

The count a product should still hold on its expiration or use-by date, rather than on the day it was made. Some experts favor labels that give this number, since counts can fall over time.

Strain

The last part of a probiotic's full name, after the genus and species. NIH lists all three among the details you can find on a label.

Prebiotic

Nondigestible food components that selectively stimulate the growth or activity of desirable microorganisms.

Synbiotic

A product that combines probiotics and prebiotics.
